Bella Lido SS15 Kaftan Love

Living in the UK for most of my adult life meant the only time I ever thought of wearing a kaftan, was over my cossie on a summer getaway, to somewhere rather exotic.

And even then, the type of kaftan I’m referring too, was more like a pool/beachside cover-up.

Think fancy schmancy, but too short to cover anything other than my ass.

Once back home, I cannot ever remember thinking of pulling out said kaftan in the country side of Staffordshire.

Just if you have no idea where I’m talking about; think rural village life, very green (from all the moisture that drops from the sky most days) cosy pubs, farms, roaring fires and hunter wellies.

No, my poolside gear only ever saw the light of day two weeks of the year…and almost never in the UK.

Although village life was beautiful, I’m more than a bit partial to sunshine and bright blue skies.

So after 5 years of deliberation and holidaying here in Australia, we took the plunge.

One thing I didn’t quite take into account though, was just how much my wardrobe would change.

These days living in SE QLD, I’m getting used to opening up a world of wardrobe possibilities by dressing up those kaftan’s.

Making them earn their keep if you like.

Our  glorious weather really does play into my hands.

I must admit though, it has taken some getting used to for me – but I’m finally (it’s only taken me 4 years) finding the beachy side to my style personality.

And this new season edit from local sunshine coast designer Bella Lido is exactly the type of kaftan that works a treat.

Bella Lido SS Kaftan Love

New Beach Kaftan Ombuk Print (wearing S/M) $99.95 Bella Lido | The Soft Touch Seamless Dress in White $49.95 Metalicus  |  Catalina Heels $179.00 Country Road (sold out online).

For me to make this look do-able, adding a slip dress underneath is a MUST.

It not only helps with the length but it’s also there to save my modesty should a gust of wind take me by surprise.

My favourite slips are the ones I mention above from Metalicus.

Seamfree and lightweight making them a perfect summer addition that doesn’t add any bulk to your outfit.

You can make the slip dresses almost invisible by choosing a colour close to the kaftan you are wearing or add a contrast like I have above.

Either way works a treat.

The shape of this kaftan is a total winner for me because I adore almost any dress that has a v-neck (but especially in a kaftan) as it makes the dress appear more streamline. I’m also passionate about fabric, this rayon voile is perfect for the summer months when the humidity kicks in.

What I love most about adding this dimension to your wardrobe though, is the choice and flexibility.

Start the day by wearing as a cover-up with your favourite bikini to the beach/poolside and thongs.

Think lunchtime drinks with a sparkly sandal or a wedge.

Or even early evening dinner: add a statement necklace, or bangles and earrings for a touch of ‘special’.

And last but not least…why not belt it over white skinny jeans?

See with a little imagination the possibilities are endless.

Bella Lido is the vision of local Sunshine Coast designer Claire Lonergan. Claire get’s her inspiration from the beauty that surrounds her on the coast. All of the pieces from her collection are hand finished and screen printed, making them unique and individual. Her beautiful collection is available online or through one of her stockists.

Are you a kaftan guru? How do you like to wear yours?

I love a kaftan dress Bev but I find it hard to find ones that don’t swamp me,some of them have so much fabric but I adore this one and you look stunning, blue is most definitely a colour that suits you ????

    • Lisa you are definitely the ‘kaftan queen’ in my eyes! You have impeccable style and dress your petite little bod to perfection! Mwah xx

  • I do love that Kaftan on you, Bev. The pattern is gorgeous. xx

  • Sophisticated Mumma

Ok as a fellow Brit, I have yet to convert to the Kaftan…is that bad? I so admire them on other people but feel utterly swamped for some reason. I have to say I have quite a few Bella Lido short summer dresses and they suit our QLD climate a treat & I’ve taken the plunge with a maxi for this summer. The blue looks gorgeous on you…can see you floating about in it over the summer. p.s love those little country villages! x

    • Nat I knew you would totally get how difficult the transition is when it comes to what we wear and how comfortable we feel…after all the years of being conservatively covered up that is! Bella Lido has some fabulous pieces, perfect for our climate.
A big YES to a summer maxi – I could live in them! Thanks for the love darling xx

  • Absolutely gorgeous Bev. Love the colours and style of that Kaftan. They really do know their stuff thsoe Bella Lido crew! Despite my blog’s brand, my kaftan experience is limited! I think I’m more of a shorts and singlet girl at the beach. BUT I love the idea of dressing up a kaftan and the slip underneath is perfect for that. xox

    • It’s so funny Wendy, but when I was writing this post I was actually thinking about you and how well you manage to wear your summer dresses when the temperature drops in Autumn. A slip really does work a treat underneath a kaftan – perfect for packing light too!
My days of wearing shorts are well and truly over, but you on the other hand look amazing in them! Thanks for the love darling xxx

  • Kathryn

Love this Bev, and the colour is perfect for you. Blue is my favourite colour 🙂 I have that slip in black, but have been thinking about getting a white one too. I would love to visit Staffordshire, sounds idyllic.

    • Thanks so much Kathryn. Blue is my colour too…and baby pink. Love them both. The slips are fabulous and offer that little bit extra to a kaftan (or under slim fitting dresses too). When I describe them to friends, I say they are like a sausage skin 😉
You would love Staffordshire – it’s so beautiful…even when its raining! xx

  • That’s a fab look! I love going to visit English villages – but I couldn’t live there!

    • Thanks Lovely! English villages are simply divine in the winter months. I adore the community spirit but I’m with you…I’m staying. No going back! xx

  • Village life sounds perfect. I would love it, haha. Love the colour of your kaftan. I don’t have one, I think it’d make me look bigger than I am hahaha. Love how you’ve styled it though. Gorgeous as usual.

    • Village life is fabulous Em (I’m sure you would love it)…but (yes, there is always a but) the weather is not. If the sun shined in the UK like in does here in QLD, no one would ever emigrate! Thanks for the love gorgeous xx

I’m a massive fan of a kaftan…love this one on you Bev ?
